  1. 1907-1963. British poet, born in Belfast. He
  2. made his debut with Blind Fireworks 1929 and
  3. developed a polished ease of expression,
  4. reflecting his classical training, as in
  5. Autumn Journal 1939. Unlike many of his
  6. contemporaries, he was politically
  7. uncommitted. Later works include the play The
  8. Dark Tower 1947, written for radio, for which
  9. he also wrote features 1941-49; a verse
  10. translation of Goethe's Faust, and the radio
  11. play The Administrator 1961. He also
  12. translated the Greek classics.
